Heartbreak For Award Winning Funny Car

Top Alcohol Funny Car driver DJ Cox had just won the award for Best Appearing Car at the 50th Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Florida when disaster struck.

The stunning Camaro-bodied car was just a few runs old and competing in the first round of the Gatornationals when Cox lost control and veered left, coming into heavy contact with the opposite wall.

Cox was unhurt, but it was a massive blow for the team to lose the car, which was looking to be a strong performer. The team made the finals of the ‘Baby Gators’ at Gainesville a week prior.

This is DJ's beautiful Funny Car on the start line of Gainesville. The car attracted the eye of the NHRA who judged it the Best Appearing Car for the prestigious event.
Here's where the luck turned for the team. The car first looked like it was just going to scrape up the wall.
But then the car hooked left and headed for the wall. Note the timing block going flying and the keen eyed spectator watching on.
The heavy impact lifted the back end of the car off the ground.

A spectator flinches as the car comes past, the body beginning to lift off and the fire system spraying extinguisher fluid.
Fortunately there looked to be no rupture of the fuel tank, or at least not one that received a spark, though it must have copped a serious hit as you can see the chassis twisted up at almost 90 degrees. A fire extinguisher jets off the front of the car.

A lady grabs hold of a boy in the spectator area as fluid sprays from the front of the car. Again, it was so fortunate there was not an accompanying fire to this crash.
DJ Cox walks away as safety officials come to the scene.
The clean up process begins. This was a heartbreaker for the team, and we wish them the best in returning to the track in the future.
